Beyond the Glamour: Why Safety is Our Priority

Beyond the Glamour: Why Safety is Our Priority

In the world of electrical engineering and industrial automation, it is easy to get distracted by the "shiny" stuff. We love talking about the massive system upgrades, the complex automation lines, and the cutting-edge energy management systems we install here at Power & Control.

But the truth is, not every week is about high-tech transformations. Sometimes, the most important work we do is the work you don’t necessarily "see"—but would certainly notice if it went wrong.

Last week was a perfect example. It wasn’t all glamorous. We spent the majority of the week on the road, carrying out several EICRs (Electrical Installation Condition Reports) on council properties.

It might not sound like the most exciting headline, but as a Project Manager, I can tell you that this is the bedrock of what we do: keeping people safe.

What Exactly is an EICR?

If you aren't familiar with the term, think of an EICR like an MOT for a building's electrical system.

Over time, all electrical installations deteriorate with wear and tear. An EICR is a formal document that is produced following an assessment of the electrical installation within a property.

Why "The Basics" Matter

Working on council properties carries a specific weight of responsibility. These aren't just buildings; they are people's homes. Last week, our team moved from property to property, testing fuse boards, checking wiring, and ensuring that every switch and socket was compliant with current British Standards.

It is meticulous work. It involves isolating circuits, testing them with specialized equipment, and documenting everything. It requires patience and a keen eye for detail—qualities that our engineers have in spades.

While this work doesn’t result in a flashy new control panel to show off on LinkedIn, the "value" is immediate:

  1. Compliance: Ensuring the council meets its legal obligations.
  2. Peace of Mind: Knowing that the tenants in those properties are safe from electrical fires or shocks.

The PAC Standard

At Power & Control, we apply the same level of rigorous detail to a domestic EICR as we do to a factory-wide automation refit. Electricity doesn't care if it's in a council flat or a manufacturing plant—it commands respect in every environment.

So, while last week might not have been "glamorous" in the traditional sense, it was a successful week. We identified issues, ensured compliance, and most importantly, we helped keep the lights on safely.

If you need advice on compliance or think your properties might be due for an EICR, don't hesitate to reach out to us at the office.
