The Challenge

Agricultural buildings often present unique structural challenges for solar integration. In this instance, the client required a high-output system to be installed on a traditional fibre cement roof. Because these surfaces can be brittle and require specific load-bearing considerations, a standard mounting approach was insufficient. The project necessitated a solution that ensured complete structural integrity without compromising the weatherproofing of the barn, all while protecting the investment from the local bird population common in rural environments.

The PAC Solution

To tackle the roofing constraints, PAC utilised a specialized Valk cross-rail system. Rather than traditional mounting, we employed high-grade hanger bolts drilled directly into the metal purlins beneath the fibre cement sheets. This ensures the weight of the 75 Canadian Solar panels is transferred directly to the building's steel frame rather than the roof surface itself.

The panels were configured in a portrait orientation to maximise the available roof pitch. For power conversion, we installed a 30kW Solis inverter, strategically mounted inside the building to protect the power electronics from the dust and moisture typical of a farmyard. Finally, to ensure the longevity of the system and prevent maintenance issues caused by wildlife, we fitted a high-durability bird mesh around the entire perimeter of the array.

The Results

The result is a high-performing, "farm-proof" solar installation that generates a massive amount of clean electricity for the holding. By leveraging the large, previously underutilised roof space of the fibre cement building, the client has successfully insulated their business against volatile commercial energy prices. The 30kW Solis system provides a reliable, low-maintenance energy stream that will serve the farm for decades to come.
