Zero Downtime, Maximum Performance
5 February 2025
In the world of critical electrical infrastructure, the term "shutdown" is one clients rightfully want to avoid. At Power and Control Ltd, we specialise in delivering complex upgrades while maintaining 100% service continuity. We are proud to announce the successful completion of a technically demanding upgrade within a fully operational substation, demonstrating our team's precision, expertise, and unwavering commitment to safety.
The project centred on modernising essential systems within the facility, which remained live throughout the entire duration of the works. The presence of existing, active switchgear demanded a level of meticulous planning and disciplined execution that goes far beyond standard installations. Our primary objective was twofold: seamlessly integrate new, high-performance systems while guaranteeing zero disruption to ongoing operations.
Through rigorous planning, strict safety controls, and close stakeholder coordination, our team navigated the complexities of the live environment to deliver a comprehensive upgrade.
Scope of Works:
- New Distribution Systems: State-of-the-art distribution circuits were installed in parallel with the existing infrastructure, a task requiring surgical precision to integrate new components without impacting live systems.
- Full Containment Installation: A robust network of ladder racking, trunking, and metal conduit was meticulously routed through the active facility. This containment system was engineered to protect new cabling and avoid any interference with the operational switchgear.
- Upgraded High-Visibility Lighting: To enhance safety and operational efficiency for site personnel, the substation's lighting was upgraded to modern, high-output fixtures, improving visibility throughout the workspace.
- Small Power and Control Circuits: New small power circuits were installed with carefully sequenced tie-ins to achieve minimal-to-zero downtime, ensuring auxiliary and control systems remained fully functional.
- Advanced Climate Control: To safeguard both new and existing sensitive electrical components, we integrated modern dehumidification and heating systems. Regulating the internal climate is critical for preventing moisture damage and reducing thermal stress, thereby extending equipment lifespan and ensuring reliability.
Working within a live substation is the ultimate test of an electrical contractor's capability. Every action, from drilling a fixing to routing a cable, carries significant risk if not managed with expert oversight. The successful completion of this project, delivered with zero disruption to our client's services, underscores Power and Control Ltd.'s ability to manage and execute high-stakes electrical upgrades. The result is a modernised, resilient, and high-functioning substation, ready to meet future demands without ever having missed a beat.
